How to Get Ghost Trails Effect 2022 Edition (Adobe Premiere, After Effects, Final Cut)
Ghost trails have a stunning impact on poi spinning videos and I'm here to show you how to get them! I've done several videos on my techniques for achieving this effect before, but I've recently changed several aspects of my technique to give me cleaner body positions and bolder patterns in the trails, so I'm going to take you through my process step by step! Be forewarned, this is now a multistep process because I am putting my video through multiple edit stages to get the effect I want.
Camera settings: 60fps, 1/60 shutter, ISO 500 or lower, aperture as far open as it'll go. Use LED panels to illuminate the performer.
Adobe Premiere/After Effects settings:
Import into 60 fps composition
Use Extract on top layer of footage and adjust settings to remove all but the LED props
Add Echo to the same footage layer and set Time to -0.016 and Operator to Maximum, adjust Decay and Echoes to taste (I generally go for no more than 8 echoes)
Final Cut settings:
Import into 60 fps project
Use Luma Keyer on top layer of footage and adjust settings to remove all but the LED props
Add Trails to the same footage layer and adjust Echoes and Duration to taste (in this video my settings were Echoes 9.0 and Duration 0.15)
Export at 60 fps and re-import footage into 24 or 30 fps project. Color grade and export to complete!
