Benchmarking in retail helps businesses measure how they compare to other retailers using internal and historical metrics as well as third-party statistics. Results can help retailers identify processes or systems that need to change in order to be more successful. Internal benchmarking analyzes how different teams within the company perform across common processes. External benchmarking (otherwise known as competitive benchmarking) compares the business’s performance to industry benchmarks. Historical benchmarking measures a business’s current performance against past performance, and finally, fixed benchmarking gauges performance against a preset internal target to test new products or processes.
