Hyper-V virtual machine version and how to upgrade with Powershell
Starting with Windows Server 2016, the virtual machine config file has changed from the XML file to a new binary file. Also with 2016 and onward it is possible to migrate VMs from older Hyper-V versions, run them with the old config version or update the VMs to the current config version. This makes it easy to change your mind in case you migrate a VM to a newer host but need to migrate back for some reason.
