Male bison can become aggressive during mating season, or the rut, which runs from June through September and peaks in July and August. During this time, male bison compete for females and become more agitated and combative. The park service says to use extra caution and give bison additional space during this time.
Bison can be unpredictable and may attack without warning or apparent reason. When agitated, a bison may hold its tail straight up in the air and could charge at any moment. A relaxed, swishing tail means they are calm, but could still charge at any moment.
