Actually, the starting point of World War II wasn't the German invasion of Poland, although that was the first real battle of the war. The war's true origins lie several years earlier, just after World War I, when the victors—Great Britain, France, the United States, and others—decided with the Treaty of Versailles to punish Germany, which they considered responsible for starting the war.
The Treaty's provisions restricted Germany's economic growth by forcing it to pay war reparations to the other countries involved. It also limited its military expansion. The result was a dire economic situation in Germany during an already difficult period for the global economy.
This situation—a depressed German population, a depressed German economy—set the stage for a mad, manipulative, and horrible dictator to seize power.
