Software is the invisible “brain” that tells computer hardware what to do. In this CAT Software introduction video, we explore what software is, how it differs from hardware, and why every computer system needs both. Learners will see the two main categories of software – system software and application software – operating systems, utilities, office suites, browsers, media players and more. We also introduce ideas like installed vs web-based applications, proprietary vs open‑source software, and how the operating system provides the desktop and GUI that learners use in class. This video is designed for Grade 10–12 CAT students as a foundation for later lessons on operating systems, utilities, licensing, and accessibility.
