In this class, we explore the great revolution in medicine during the Enlightenment and the end of the dominance of Galenic medicine, which had shaped European thought for almost fifteen centuries. We will see how the theory of humors, temperaments, uroscopy, pulse measurement, diets, drugs, and bloodletting structured medical practice from Antiquity to the Modern Age.
Using British and French case studies, we analyze how empiricism, the experimental method, and the new scientific philosophy transformed our understanding of the human body. We will study key figures such as Francis Bacon, William Harvey, Morgagni, Pierre Charles Alexandre Louis, and Edward Jenner, as well as the birth of pathological anatomy, the critique of bloodletting, smallpox vaccination, and the emergence of modern public health.
This is a fundamental course for understanding the history of medicine, the transition from humoralism to scientific medicine, and the link between science, philosophy, politics, and progress in the 18th century.
