Liquidity Providers supply the capital to the Senior Pool.
Borrowers propose pools (with terms like the interest rate) for the Backers to assess. Backers supply capital to the junior tranches of Borrower Pools.
The Goldfinch protocol has four core participants: Borrowers, Backers, Liquidity Providers, and Auditors.
Let’s first take a look at Liquidity Providers. They supply the capital to the Senior Pool and Backers supply capital to the Junior tranche which works directly with Borrowers. Thus Backers staking first-loss capital in case of fraud on the Borrowers side but also they earn extra interest as 20% of Senior pool income reallocating to the junior tranche. This is the main difference between Liquidity Providers and Backers.
Backers can do this by staking GFI directly on another Backer. It is important for Backers to ask the right questions to Borrowers as it decides total limit, term, payment period, and interest rate. Backers which supply early on are able to gain an additional GFI reward but the reward amount decreasing for later Backers as the Borrower Pool reaches its limit.
As we see Backers taking a bigger risk than Liquidity Providers but get rewards in case you are an early Backer and bigger interest rate overall. Also, there are auditors who perform human-level checks on Borrowers to confirm they are legitimate, helping to secure the protocol against fraud.
