Microsoft Excel Tutorial: Comparing Two Worksheets.

Welcome back to another episode of the MrExcel netcast! In today's episode, we will be discussing a question sent in by Ray about comparing worksheets in Excel. This solution is specifically for Excel 2010, as it was supposed to be included in Excel 2007 but was not in the final product. But don't worry, we have a workaround for those using Excel 2007 or earlier versions.

Ray has two worksheets with similar data, one for January and one for February. He wants to highlight any cells in the February worksheet that have changed from the January worksheet. To do this, we will use conditional formatting. First, select all the cells in the February worksheet. Then, go to the Home tab and click on Conditional Formatting. From there, select New Rule and then choose "Use a formula to determine which cells to format."

Now, we need to write a formula that will compare the cells in February to the cells in January. In this case, we will use the formula "B3<>Jan!B3" which means if the cell in February is not equal to the cell in January, it will be highlighted. You can choose any formatting you want for the highlighted cells, such as a green fill. This feature of conditional formatting, where you can refer to cells in another worksheet, is only available in Excel 2010 and newer versions.

I hope this solution helps those of you using Excel 2010 or newer. And for those using older versions, it may be time to consider upgrading to take advantage of this great feature.
