Rimini's first foreign-born mayor is Jamil Sadegholvaad: "Diversity is enriching."
Jamil Sadegholvaad, 49, born in Rimini to an Iranian father and a mother from Romagna, is the first mayor of a provincial capital of foreign origin. The city, famous for its Fellini films, chose the former councilor of the outgoing council as its new mayor in the first round, with a result just over 51%, enough to avoid a runoff. Unlike other municipalities, in Rimini, Sadegholvaad did not receive the support of the Five Star Movement (M5S), which instead backed another member of the former council, Gloria Lisi, who received just 2.4%. "I believe these telephone area code results are increasingly common," the new mayor stated, "and that it is appropriate to seek common ground for a shared path." Regarding anti-vaxxers, given the presence of the aspiring mayor of the 3V Movement in the newly elected local parliament, Sadegholvaad expresses his perplexity. Regarding the ongoing lack of a law on ius soli, he explains: "I have repeatedly criticized the Democratic Party for tackling certain issues at the wrong time in history. We need to find the right way: I don't believe it's appropriate to indiscriminately grant citizenship to those born in a given area. There must be a sharing of values, principles, and ideals. This is very important to me," concludes Jamil Sadegholvaad, the first "melting pot" mayor of Rimini, where his father has run a carpet shop for over 40 years and where he lives with his daughter and his Afro-Brazilian wife. "In my house, there is a diversity of religions," he concludes, "and three languages are spoken fluently."
