DHL Fastest Lap Award: FORMULA 1 PIRELLI GRAND PRIX DU CANADA 2019 (Valtteri Bottas / Mercedes)
Valtteri Bottas is back in the running. After the Finn clocked the DHL Fastest Lap in the 2019 season opener in Australia, thereby becoming the first driver to score a bonus point under the new regulation, the Mercedes man has now repeated the feat in Canada.
Unlike in Melbourne, Bottas pursued a different strategy in Montreal, securing the fastest lap this time with a late tire change. On a set of fresh soft tires, the Finn posted the best time of the day on the penultimate lap of the race at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
His time of 1:13.78 minutes was not only 1.278 seconds superior to the second-fastest lap of the Canadian GP set by Ferrari's Charles Leclerc but also established a new track record. Bottas undercut the time set 15 years ago by the then Ferrari driver Rubens Barrichello by more than half a second.
"The pace of the car was good once I was in free air, so we decided to do an additional pit stop at the end and fight for the quickest lap on fresh tires," said Bottas. "It's nice to get the extra point for fastest lap."
In the overall standings of the DHL Fastest Lap Award, Bottas has now drawn level with Pierre Gasly and Charles Leclerc on two best times each. Lewis Hamilton is fourth on a single DHL Fastest Lap.
