Not for everyone: Could the Universe have consciousness?

For life to emerge in the Universe, certain fundamental physics values (the force of gravity or the mass of an electron, for example) must fall within a very narrow range. This suggests that it is highly unlikely that the Universe would acquire a range of parameters comparable to the existence of life. But we see a completely different picture. The initial conditions of the Universe and the laws of physics are almost perfectly tuned to allow life to have a chance to develop.
Astrophysicists have so far unsuccessfully attempted to explain the nature of space, time, and matter. But so far, the best theory of the very large—general relativity—is incompatible with the best theory of the very small—quantum mechanics. However, it is also impossible to assume that we will never overcome these obstacles. There is great hope that someday physicists will proudly present to the public the complete story of the fundamental nature of the Universe. English astronomer Arthur Eddington was the first scientist to confirm the general theory of relativity. Reflecting on the limitations of physics in "The Nature of the Physical World," Eddington argued that the only thing we truly know about the nature of matter is that some of it is conscious; we know this because we are directly aware of the consciousness of our own brains.
Eddington believed that the nature of matter outside the brain is inseparable from the nature of matter inside the brain. Philip Goff, professor of philosophy at the Central European Institute, developed these reflections in his book "Consciousness and Fundamental Reality" as an extended argument for panpsychism: the view that all matter is conscious.
