Takumã Kuikuro: A view from the Xingu
Filmmaker Takumã Kuikuro talks from his village in the Amazon rainforest about the indigenous community’s deep connection with nature which underpins every aspect of their lives.
Takumã Kuikuro is a filmmaker living in the Ipatse village of the Kuikuro people in the Indigenous Territory of the Xingu, which is in the Mato Grosso state of Brazil. His work is largely in documentary film and has been awarded several prizes, including an honorary fellowship by Queen Mary University of London.
His collaboration with Simon McBurney (Complicité) and Paul Heritage (People's Palace Projects) began in 2014 when they were invited to attend a Kwarup, a funeral ceremony, in the neighbouring Yawalapiti village between the Tuatuari and Kuluene River, where Takumã was participating in and filming the rituals.
It is a collaboration that continues to grow.
