In this video, we apply aerodynamic shape optimization using the adjoint technique to a 3D NACA 0015 airfoil.
The method runs through a number of cycles, each containing:
a primal run (normal CFD simulation of the aerodynamics)
a dual run (adjoint simulation to link the lift improvement goal to the flow field)
a sensitivity map calculation (to calculate how the surface should be morphed to increase lift)
a morphing step to implement these suggestions. The morphing is applied to the volume & surface mesh directly
