The story begins in a busy restaurant where two couples are enjoying each other's company while a major football game plays on the television screens.
Alex Cross and John Sampson are best friends and colleagues at the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police Department, and they are accompanied by their respective partners, Maria and Onika.
After Alex and Maria demonstrate to their friends that their romance is still going strong after years of marriage, Maria heads to the restroom at the outdoor restaurant.
At that moment, tragedy strikes: gunshots ring out, and by the time Alex and John arrive, there is nothing they can do.
Alex finds Maria critically wounded, and she dies in his arms, leaving him devastated by the loss.
