Adding a 4:3 aspect ratio in Adobe Premiere Pro is a straightforward process. This aspect ratio, also known as standard definition, has a width four units wide for every three units of height. To achieve this, you'll primarily work within the Sequence Settings.
First, create a new sequence or open an existing one. Navigate to Sequence then Sequence Settings. In the Sequence Settings window, locate the Frame Size section. Here, you'll manually input the dimensions that correspond to a 4:3 ratio. Common 4:3 resolutions include 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, and 1280x960. Enter your desired width in the horizontal field and the corresponding height in the vertical field.
Once you've entered the frame size, Premiere Pro will likely warn you about mismatched preview file settings. You can either adjust these settings to match your new frame size or proceed with the existing settings. For most basic 4:3 needs, proceeding with the existing settings is usually fine.
After adjusting the frame size, you might notice black bars appearing on the sides of your video if your source footage has a different aspect ratio, such as the widescreen 16:9. To address this, select your video clip in the timeline. In the Effect Controls panel, under the Motion tab, you can adjust the Scale parameter to zoom in on your footage until it fills the 4:3 frame. Be mindful that zooming in too much might crop the top and bottom of your video. Alternatively, you can adjust the Position parameter to reframe the shot within the 4:3 aspect ratio.
Another approach is to create a black solid color matte the size of your 4:3 frame and place it on a track below your video. Then, scale your 16:9 footage so its height matches the 4:3 frame, positioning it in the center. This will create pillarboxing, with black bars on the sides, preserving the entire original image. Choose the method that best suits your creative vision for the project.
