WIZARDS & TOOLS
Ansys Simulation provides a number of Tools and Wizards to assist the user with successful simulation projects.
• This provides a large number of aids and help file information to assist the user with problem setup and interpretation of problem involving static loading and fatigue loading.
In this chapter we will also understand the Fatigue Analysis.

• Once you start Mechanical Wizard a toolbox will appear as shown in the adjoining figure.
Fatigue Analysis
• In Material Science, Fatigue is the progressive and localized structural damage that occurs when a material is subjected to cyclic loading.
Fatigue occurs when a material is subjected to repeat loading and unloading.
If the loads are above a certain value, small cracks will appear. These cracks will eventually increase and the structure will suddenly fracture.
Fatigue Life
Fatigue Life (N)- It is defined as the number of stress cycles of a specified character that a specimen sustains before failure of a specified nature occurs.
• There are different methods to predict fatigue life of materials:
Uniform Material Law (UML).
S-N Curve
Uniform Material Law
• UML was developed for fatigue life prediction of aluminium and titanium alloys by the end of 20th century and extended to high strength steels and cast iron.
• UML is a handy method as only tensile strength data of metals are needed for estimation of the strain-life curves.
S-N Curve
• In high cycle fatigue situations, materials performance is commonly characterized by and S-N curve, also known as a Wohler curve.
• S-N curves are derived from tests that focuses on the nominal stress required to cause a fatigue failure in some number of cycles.
This test results in data presented as a plot of stress (S) against the number of cycles to failure (N), which is known
as S-N curve
• It should be noted that there are several short comings of S-N fatigue data.
There are many factors that affect this, like corrosion, temperature, and the presence of notches.
Alternating Stress Mean Stress
Types of Fatigue Loading
There are 2 types of loading conditions:
Fully Reversed Loading
• Zero Based Loading(Repeated Loading)
