In some mountainous regions of Afghanistan, snow can be more than just a natural phenomenon; it's a true commodity. In areas where summer temperatures often exceed 40°C (104°F) and electricity and refrigeration are not readily available, people use an ancient and highly effective technology: natural snow storage.
In winter, when large amounts of snow fall in the mountains, locals collect it and compact it into deep pits or cellars. These storage facilities can be several meters deep. The snow is typically covered with a layer of straw, branches, or earth. These materials act as insulation and significantly slow the melting process.
Due to the low soil temperature and the tight compaction of the snow, a kind of natural refrigerator is created within. In these conditions, snow can last for many months—even until midsummer.
When the hot season arrives, the snow is removed from the underground storage facilities, loaded into trucks or carts, and transported to towns and villages. There, it is sold to local residents and traders. People use this snow to cool drinks, store food, and prepare traditional cold desserts.
Scientifically, this method works due to several physical factors:
thermal insulation of soil and plant materials;
low thermal conductivity of compacted snow;
slow heat exchange in deep underground spaces.
In fact, this is a form of passive cooling, known to humanity for hundreds of years, long before the invention of electric refrigerators.
Thus, ordinary winter snow is transformed into a valuable summer resource and a source of income, and the simple idea of storing it becomes a true example of human ingenuity and adaptation to harsh climatic conditions.
