Opel Astra G, thermostat replacement. The engine doesn't reach operating temperature; only in traffic does the temperature rise to 80-82 degrees. The upper hose and the top of the radiator are warm, a sure sign that the thermostat is failing. I bought a new thermostat and a rubber gasket online. I also bought an N8 Torx socket, an extension, a ratchet, and a set of Torx sockets. Open the hood and first pump out the coolant from the expansion tank. I used a 20 cc syringe without a needle. Then I removed the decorative plastic engine cover with the ECOTEC logo, and then disconnected the hoses from the thermostat. Now we can unscrew the thermostat. I unscrewed three bolts, but the thermostat wouldn't come off. I had to unscrew another bolt, using an N10 socket, below the "sick" one. And now the stuck thermostat can be removed easily. I cleaned the mounting surface and removed the dirt. I installed the gasket on the new thermostat and placed it in its place. I tightened the three mounting bolts and reinstalled the bolt underneath. I connected the hoses and filled the expansion tank with antifreeze. I started the engine and warmed it up until the radiator was warm and the fan came on.
There were no leaks, and the thermostat was working. I reinstalled the plastic engine cover with the ECOTEC logo. All work is complete; close the hood.
