The difference in the meaning is subtle between “a few” and “few” but I will help you to understand it with an example -
Ex :-
Few members of his family live in this apartment.
We used “few” to indicate that only one or two members of his family live in this apartment.
(note - one or two members only)
However, if we were to add "a" to few.
It would mean something else:
A few members of his family live in this apartment.
It means that “some” members of his family live in this apartment.
It's still not a lot of them, but it can be more than three or four or close to “half”.
Just to understand:
In a family of 10 members :-
FEW (1 or 2 members)
A FEW (4-6 members)
THE FEW (7-9 member)
Important thing to note - :
FEW (not many)
It often conveys a negative sense.
Ex :- I have few pens in my pocket. I can’t lend them to you.
A FEW (some)
It conveys a positive sense.
Ex :- I have a few pens in my pocket. I can lend those if you need.
THE FEW (majority or the remaining items)
Ex :- I purchased the few black pens from the shopkeeper.
(It means, I purchased almost all the black pens that he had)
Hope this helps!✌🏻
Thanks a million🙂
