Thames Town – The “Little London” of China
In the outskirts of Shanghai, in the district of Songjiang, there’s a place that makes you feel as if you’ve suddenly been transported to a small English town: Thames Town.
It’s one of China’s most fascinating urban planning experiments — a “themed town” that meticulously recreates the classic British architecture of London and its surroundings.
⸻
A Replica of an English Town
Thames Town, completed in 2006, was built as part of Shanghai’s “One City, Nine Towns” project.
The goal was to create new residential areas inspired by various cultures, in order to reduce the population density in central Shanghai. Thames Town was designed as the “English-style” town.
Narrow cobblestone streets, red telephone booths, corner pubs, Gothic churches, flower-decked balconies — every detail looks as though it’s been taken straight from England. Some buildings were even modeled after real British structures.
The result is a charming yet slightly surreal place that brings a touch of Europe to the heart of China.

Real City or Movie Set?
On paper, Thames Town was meant to be a new residential area for about 10,000 residents.
However, most of the houses were purchased by investors, and only a few people live there permanently.
Today, the streets are often quiet and many shops remain closed — giving the town an eerie “ghost town” atmosphere.
There’s one exception, though: wedding photos!
Every day, dozens of newlyweds come here to pose in front of the iconic red phone booths.
For photographers, Thames Town has become a vast open-air studio.

Places to Visit in Thames Town
• Central Square: Surrounded by stone buildings and small cafés — it truly feels like a British town square.
• Church: Inspired by an Anglican church in Bristol, featuring an impressive exterior design.
• Riverside Walkway: Walking along the small “Thames River” is especially beautiful in the late afternoon light.
• Street Photography: Pub signs, red double-decker buses, and cycling photographers complete the atmosphere.

How to Get There
From central Shanghai, take Metro Line 9 to Songjiang Xincheng Station,
then continue with a short taxi ride. The total journey takes about one hour.
