Since 1995, Lesch has been a professor of astrophysics at the Chair of Astronomy and Astrophysics – Observational and Experimental Astronomy at the University Observatory of Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich.
He also teaches philosophy of science at the Munich School of Philosophy.
His main research areas are cosmic plasma physics – black holes and neutron stars.
He is an expert reviewer for astrophysics for the German Research Foundation (DFG) and a member of the German Astronomical Society. He is also a non-fiction author.

Lesch began his media career at the broadcaster BR-alpha, initially with alpha-Centauri (1998–2007), in which he covered topics in the field of astrophysics.
