"Motown was linking the Marvelettes with their A-List producers in 1966, no doubt, with a view to an upcoming album that would be the one of Motown's best of the sixties. On May, 24, 1966, the group was in the studio under the direction of Holland-Dozier-Holland, completing a cover of Robert Parker's hit, "Barefootin'." The song must have been in the middle of it's climb up the charts as Chashbox shows the record at number 11 for the week ending June, 11, 1966; the chart also shows the song had been on the charts for 8 weeks by this point.
Robert Parker's original was already perfect, so Holland-Dozier-Holland wisely stuck closely to the original, with only a minor quickening of the the tempo and a slicker Detroit vibe. Wanda Rogers gives a sassy, understated cool delivery of the dance hit and it's nice that HDH had the actual group, Katherine and Gladys, performing the backing vocals without "sweetening."
A shout out is in order for the Funk Brothers' performance here- well, a shout out is ALWAYS in order for these guys, but this is one of their best, tightest performances. The guitar work of Robert White, Joe Messina and Eddie Willis practically steals the show here. Equal parts Detroit Cool and Southern Funk. The drumming is air tight and the horn section is brilliant here. One thing that you've really got to pay attention to though is James Jamerson's bass; throughout the record, he takes a laid back approach, the playing isn't quite as busy as he's famous for, BUT - at the end, the vamp into the fade out, it's as if he flipped a switch because all of a sudden for those few last seconds, he plays some Unholy mix of upper-register and lower-register notes. He starts on a low note then in two swift moves, ends up at the top range then doubles back midway and finally back to the lower range of his bass. Hopefully, you have earbuds that will allow you to really hear the bass- cuz you gotta hear it to believe it.
