Raised Panel, Flat Panel - What Kind of Cabinet Doors and Drawer Fronts are Available?

In this episode we will be going over the different cabinet door and drawer front options that you will have when picking out your kitchen cabinets. Let’s get started!
There are several types of cabinet doors to choose from including; Flat Panel, Raised Panel, Slab, and accent doors. The door style that you choose will be a big part of what will give your cabinets their final look. Whether you are after a traditional, shaker, modern, rustic or contemporary look, the cabinet door design, along with your selection of finish and wood species, sets the tone and style for your entire kitchen.
FLAT PANEL CABINET DOORS
Flat panel doors are similar to a picture frame in appearance. The outside perimeter of the door is thicker than the flat center panel giving the door a nice clean recessed appearance. Flat panel doors are perfect for anyone that is looking for a sleek, clean design and can be used for traditional, transitional and even contemporary cabinetry. The flat panel doors are the type generally associated with shaker style cabinetry due to the simplistic design.
RAISED PANEL CABINET DOORS
Raised panel cabinets are one of the more formal designs, used predominantly in traditional-style kitchens. In a raised panel, the cabinet is made up of a center panel and an outer rim or overlay similar to the flat panel doors. Although the huge difference is that the center panel is carved or raised in the middle, and then slopes backward to the edges. The overlay around the panel is generally grooved or has some type of decorative edge on the interior and exterior. The entire effect is to make the cabinet door look as though it was carved out of a single, large plank, and it’s often subtly decorative in style. You have the same outside and inside profile options and the raised panel cabinet doors work well for many different kitchen cabinet styles.
SLAB CABINET DOORS
Slab cabinet doors are completely flat. They have no dimension. Slab doors can be constructed in many ways, and the construction methods largely dictate the cost of the cabinets. One constant, though, is the fact that slab doors have no frames like the panel style doors have.
• Solid hardwood. This is the most expensive, but also the most durable and solid construction. These doors are formed from solid hardwood boards glued up edgewise. These are found in only the most custom installations.
• Class A, furniture-grade plywood. These are finish-grade plywood panels, in which the face layer is a high-quality hardwood applied over cheaper ply of pine or other softer woods. The edges of the slabs are covered with a hardwood veneer tape known as edgebanding. We do have a video showing that in greater detail in the description down below.
• MDF (particle board). Medium-density fiberboard is a standard material used for doors that will be painted, or as the core layer for doors covered with plastic laminate or thermofoil.
Accent CABINET DOORS
An accent cabinet door is not generally used throughout the entire kitchen, but is used as a decorative accent. This can include glass doors, mullion doors, leaded glass doors, aluminum frame doors, and so on. A lot of times you will see kitchens with some of the upper cabinets having glass door inserts instead of the wood panels. This gives you a nice option of adding internal cabinet lighting in which we will be going over that in much greater detail later in this series.
