Lastpass breach what to do
I wish this was just click-bait and a cheap way to get you to click and watch my video but sadly, it's not. I received an email from LastPass on December 22, 2022 directing me to their blog regarding some security concerns.

The blog describes a security breach into their systems in August 2022 and how that information was used to further access additional secure systems. Their investigation lead to finding the "threat actor" was able to copy customer account information and they also copied a backup of customer vault data from their encrypted storage container. This is bad! Yes, our passwords are the only way to decrypt the vault contents and LastPass states it would take millions of years in most cases to break the passwords if customers used their default recommended security settings. However, I've heard that before from other security situations in past decades only to have technology evolve quickly enough allowing processing power never believed possible to shrink those "million years" down to far more attainable time-frames. Most importantly, they have the backup in their possession so there's nothing to keep mass-retry, brute-force attempts. Also, they have basic customer information which would include IP addresses used to access LastPass so this is a very serious theft. In my book, these vaults' contents are as good as open to whomever stole them and likely anyone to whom they sell the details.
I'm personally switching all my accounts' usernames and passwords out of LastPass and into one of the competitive password managers I've listed below and I'd recommend you do the same if you've entrusted all your most important account credentials to LastPass. I've used their services for so many years I've lost track so I'm truly disappointed with this security breach. Ironically, after an incident like this, they'll have to improve their internal security processes and systems and if they survive the lawsuits, the company will likely have some of the best security available as so often happens from these high-profile security hacks but regaining the trust from anyone isn't likely until sadly, one of these competitors also get hacked and we all flock back to LastPass.
