Akbas in West Kazakhstan: Advantages of Breeding Cattle, Genetics, and Diet | Amaner, ErQanat Group
The West Kazakhstan Region is the region with the highest Akbas population in the country.
We spent the third and fourth days of the AgroCaravan Meat 2023 here. First, we visited the Amaner company, one of 15 farms in the West Kazakhstan Region that are classified as Class 1 by the Republican Chamber of the Kazakh White-Headed Breed.
Farmers often purchase cattle from Russia to inject fresh blood and expand the genetic diversity of their own herds. The benefits of working with breeding animals are obvious: due to higher feed conversion rates, the calves reach slaughter weight more quickly. Akbas are also prized for their endurance, ease of feeding, and calm disposition.
Our second stop was ErQanat Group. This company's main specialty is cargo transportation, and livestock farming began just two years ago, when the founder purchased a farm 250 km from Uralsk and imported 287 Qazaq Aqbas breeding heifers.
Currently, the farm has 487 breeding herds, plus 257 young cattle. Most of the year, the cattle are kept on pasture. The Akbas have ample pasture, and are only fed in winter.
During the cold season, the animals are kept in a facility with a windbreak, heated drinking troughs, and shelters to protect them from precipitation. They built all of this from scratch.
