In this episode of rebuilding Heroes of Might and Magic 1, we get artifacts fully working — from the moment your hero picks one up all the way through to seeing the effects reflected in the hero screen and on the battle screen.
The first major chunk of work was research: manually cataloguing all 37 artifact entries (33 randomly generated, plus the spellbook and four ultimate artifacts), screenshotting each pickup event dialog from the original game, and compiling the flavor text, stat effects, and tooltip strings into reference tables. That three-hour data collection effort turned out to be the real foundation for everything that followed.
From there, the focus shifted to implementation. The artifact pickup dialog needed to correctly identify whether an artifact is fixed or randomly assigned, display the right flavor text and artifact image in a properly laid-out dialog box, and then actually apply the artifact's effects to the hero. Early builds showed the pickup event firing and items landing in inventory — but stat bonuses weren't being applied to attack, defense, spell power, or knowledge. Morale and luck artifacts were appearing in the tooltip breakdown but weren't influencing the computed values. Gold-generating artifacts like the Endless Sack of Gold were paying out correctly each new day but the pickup dialog text was missing the specific gold amount.
Each of those issues gets tracked down and fixed across several AI-assisted iterations, including correcting the Fizbin of Misfortune from minus one to minus two morale, updating effective stat calculations so hero-equipped artifacts properly boost creature attack and defense on both the hero screen and in active battles, and fixing spell learning so the mage guild and magic shrines use effective knowledge rather than the hero's base value.
By the end, heroes picking up artifacts see the correct dialog, their stats update, their creatures reflect the bonuses in battle, and luck and morale propagate as expected. Still on the to-do list: rogue-guarded artifact encounters, the leprechaun purchase event, and the Ballista of Quickness (which will wait until castle siege battles are implemented).
