A normal day at the Berlin Zoo | Panda, Gorilla, and Co.
Pandas, gorillas, and other animals are showing everyday life at the Berlin Zoo and Tierpark today.
When zookeeper Detlef Liebschwager arrives at work at six in the morning, his day at the zoo begins with a tour of the predator house. Afterwards, the sun bear Maika is served her soup—by the district manager himself, of course! The elderly female bear now lives in the former enclosure of panda Bao Bao, who died in 2012 at the age of 34. The small predators, such as sand cat Wiss and the meerkats, still have to wait patiently for food. They are only fed in the afternoon, always one after the other.
District animal keeper Claudia Walther also has a lot to do in the early morning in the Tierpark's Afrikanum. After all, giraffes, antelopes, and waterbucks all wait for their breakfast here almost simultaneously! Around midday, the Ugandan giraffes are also caught in a violent thunderstorm. For the first time, the new director of the Afrikanum is experiencing how the giant animals behave in such an extreme, exceptional situation.
The zoo's emu chicks are also experiencing pure excitement: Veterinarian Dr. Schüle wants to touch their feathers today to determine their sex! Meanwhile, outside in the South American enclosure, the "terribly nice" ostrich family is busy incubating eggs. As with the emus, Peggy the hen shares the breeding duties with her husband Al.
The reptile enclosure at Berlin Zoo is currently experiencing a veritable baby boom. Zookeeper Ronny Kessner is particularly proud of the new arrivals among the snake tortoises – raising them is particularly complicated.
