Traditional Border Morris side from East Worcestershire who meet once a week to practice dances.
A traditional welsh border Morris dancing side from East Worcestershire. We meet once a week, on Wednesday evenings, to practice dances in a wonderfully atmospheric, rustic barn near Upton Snodsbury. We are a member of the Morris Federation.
We dance using hazel sticks wearing painted (leafy, green and black) faces, colourful autumnal rag jackets and top hats decorated with pheasant feathers, flowers and/or leaves. Everyone has their own slightly different customised look!
The traditional dancers of old were farm hands who had no work, they danced to entertain the villagers who gave them money, this was seen as begging and highly illegal when the police appeared the dancers would scarper, washing their faces in the nearest trough and reversing their rag jackets, tatters (bits of material were sown inside jackets for warmth in winter).
