United States Postal Service’s Registered Mail, known in short as simply USPS Registered Mail, is the safest way to ship physical precious metals like silver and gold bullion.
USPS Registered mail is so secure, the U.S. government uses it to mail classified information.
With USPS Registered Mail you can purchase as much as $50,000 in insurance per parcel. Overall, it is pretty cost effective. To ensure a parcel for $50,000, it cost less than $100 at current rates.
These are recent rates for USPS registered mail.
Private couriers like FedEx, DHL, or UPS do not offer insurance for physical precious metals. In fact all three explicitly state in their terms and agreements that you should use their services to ship physical precious metals. Unless a precious metal dealer gives you a full insured private shipping label to ship your bullion, you will want to stick with USPS Registered Mail.
Here are some items you will need to ship bullion using USPS Registered Mail:
You will need a Proof of Mailing and Postal Service Form 3806, both of which you can get at the post office.
You will need a camera as you should always take images documenting the parcel's holdings before shipping them.
You will need two different sized shipping boxes per parcel you are sending. Double boxing your bullion parcels helps ensure less of a chance the parcel will be tampered with or break open if it is accidentally dropped.
You will need Reinforced Gummed Kraft Paper Tape to seal the exterior corners and creases for each parcel you will be shipping.
You will need water and some time for drying after application.
You will need 1″ wide filament tape to seal the interior creases of all the boxes you plan to use in shipment as well as securing shut any and all coin tube tops being shipped.
You don't want any coins or bullion items to make noise in transit.
Be sure to always insert either some folded paper packing tape, styrofoam, or old newspaper to fill the empty space between coin tubes and their lids. Secure any and all coin tube lids with reinforced 1" tape. Always wrap your bullion bars with lots of scrap paper or bubble wrap.
NOTE: Please do not use packing peanuts, shredded paper, or any other packing material that will make a mess when opened.
Before sealing your parcel, you will want to insert a printed Packing
Slip inside your parcels to help identify:
1) where and to whom you are shipping it to
2) who you are
3) your return address
4) the explicit contents identifying every piece of bullion contained in that specific parcel
5) your contact information to help differentiate and identify your bullion upon delivery
6) Finally, shake the box to ensure you cannot hear anything.
On the outside of the parcel use nondescript identifiers or abbreviations instead of obvious terms like coin, bullion, gold, silver, etc. For example, instead of writing SD Bullion on the label, use the term SD Bearing Supply.
When moving any heavy bullion parcels from home to the USPS post office location, you might want to use a suitcase with wheels and perhaps canvas bags which will not tear in transit.
BE SURE that YOU:
Do not let the post office talk you out of using Registered Mail. It saves money to go unregistered, but the small savings they may be trying to offer you could cost you everything. USPS has a small clause in their insurance policy stating that they will not honor insurance for lost precious metals unless they are shipped by
