"Women in Pasungan" is an Indonesian drama film released in 1980 and directed by Ismail Soebardjo. It stars Nungki Kusumastuti, Frans Tumbuan, and Rini S. Bono. The film won the Citra Award for Best Film at the 1981 Indonesian Film Festival (FFI). It also won several other Citra Awards in other categories that same year.
This film is noted as the first feature film to depict the ancient Javanese tradition of shackling people deemed mentally ill, even if they were family members. This tradition of shackling has been banned in Indonesia since 1976.
Besides its well-known status in Indonesian film history, "Women in Pasungan" was also well-received at the 1981 Berlin Film Festival as one of the films brought by the Indonesian contingent and received special recognition for its traditional cultural content. This recognition made "Woman in Shackles" one of the Indonesian films ever purchased by Oscar-winning German producer Manfred Durniok for European release. The film was again selected for screening in Australia in 2010 at the Indonesian Film Festival in Melbourne and Sydney, Victoria.
This film tells the story of Fitria (Nungki Kusumastuti), a symbol of Indonesian women: beautiful, soft-spoken, humble, simple, and especially flexible in all matters. She always obeys the orders of her parents and husband (Frans Tumbuan). This is where all the problems arise, and are reflected in this film.
