Can we use the wind load values used to design columns/beams to design the secondary structures of the building as well?
This question comes up frequently: Can we use the same wind load values used to design beams or columns to design secondary structures such as wall girts or roof purlins, etc.?
The answer is no.
You cannot use the same load for calculations.
If you look at the method for calculating wind loads in the Thai Standard 1311-50, you will see that the types of structures used to calculate wind loads are clearly categorized. This can be found in the table in Appendix B.
Therefore, before calculating wind pressure... We always need to consult this table first to determine the type of structure we are designing. Basically, structures are divided into three types: 1. Main structure - this includes beams and columns. 2. Wall structure - purlins. 3. Roof structure - battens.
The reason for dividing the calculations this way is because each type of structure uses a different CpCg coefficient. The zoning and even the angles used in force analysis will differ accordingly.
