Russia's Only Aircraft Carrier Kuznetsov
The Admiral Kuznetsov is Russia's only aircraft carrier and serves as the flagship of the Russian Navy. Commissioned in 1990, it belongs to the Kuznetsov-class and was designed during the Cold War to project Soviet naval power. Unlike Western carriers, the Kuznetsov emphasizes both air defense and surface strike capabilities, carrying a mixed complement of fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and heavy anti-ship missiles.
The carrier features a distinctive ski-jump ramp for aircraft takeoffs, as it lacks catapult systems. Its air wing typically includes Su-33 fighter jets and Ka-27 helicopters. With a full displacement of around 55,000 tons and powered by conventional boilers, the Kuznetsov has faced persistent technical issues, including power plant malfunctions and maintenance delays. Despite these challenges, it remains a key symbol of Russian naval aviation.
Deployed primarily in the Mediterranean and the Arctic, the vessel has participated in high-profile missions, including airstrikes during Russia’s involvement in the Syrian conflict. However, its operational reliability has often been criticized due to breakdowns, accidents, and prolonged periods of repair. Currently, the Kuznetsov is undergoing extensive modernization to address its aging systems and extend its service life.
