Here's an alternative version of the jet firefighter plane made from the LEGO Technic 42040 set.
Here we have access not only to the plane, but also to some additional elements that complement the set and make it more playable – which is great!
Oddly enough, the plane left a positive impression on me, and I really enjoyed flying it around the apartment!
The plane's fuselage is very narrow, and the wingspan is quite small – just 20 centimeters, half that of the main model. But despite its modest size and small number of parts, this plane has a whopping five functions! Let's take a look at them all.
Let's start with the simplest function – the rudder. The rudder angle is changed directly by hand, without any complicated mechanisms. This function has migrated from the main model without any changes.
The next function involves the joystick. By moving this joystick longitudinally, we change the position of the ailerons. The ailerons themselves are leaky, but still fully functional.
To get acquainted with the third function, we need to look under the plane. There are two levers, one of which controls the airbrake. Remember the panel I installed on top of the fuselage to cover the hole between the halves? Well, that panel is the airbrake flap of the aircraft.
At the bottom, or rather inside the flap, there's a pin attached, which is purely decorative; this pin simulates the retractable piston rod of a hydraulic cylinder, or something similar, found on real aircraft.
As I read online, this brake is used primarily during flight—for example, to reduce the aircraft's speed before a maneuver or turn. It's also used for braking on the ground!
Now let's look at the coolest feature of this plane. By rotating the jet nozzle, we can either retract or extend the landing gear. It's quite fun to play with this feature!
And finally, let's take a look at the cockpit. It features a blue seat, a red control column, and a panel with an instrument panel shaped like a transparent Lego light bulb.
But that's not all—you remember that there's another lever on the bottom of the plane? Well, with this lever, we can open and close the canopy on top of the cockpit. What? What canopy?
In aviation, a canopy is the transparent part of the cockpit that protects the crew from oncoming airflow, weather conditions, and noise, and also provides visual visibility.
In short, it's a wonderful jet with many useful and interesting features. And the additional airstairs and pump-generator trolley add extra points to the set. But like any alternative Lego model, this plane is still inferior to the main model. Which, in my opinion, is quite logical!
