The arapaima, also known as the giant arapaima, or Brazilian arapaima, or giant arapaima, or arapaima, or pirarucu, or paiche (Latin: Arapaima gigas) is a tropical freshwater fish of the family Aravanidae, order Aravaniformes.
Due to its archaic morphology, it is considered a living fossil.
One of the largest freshwater fish in the world, typically up to 2 meters in length, but individual specimens reach 3 meters, and according to unconfirmed reports, specimens up to 4.6 meters in length have been observed. The maximum recorded weight was 200 kilograms.
