Jaya orders release of water from Mettur Dam for adi Perukku fest

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today ordered release of water from the Mettur dam to ensure that there was water in the Cauvery river for the celebration of Aadi Perukku festival.
In a statement here, she said 'Aadi Perukku is celebrated in a grand manner every year, to pay our respects to Mother Cauvery and pray for a prosperous and bountiful agricultural season'.

''I had received requests from the people of the Cauvery region and the agricultural communities for release of water in time for the Aadi Perukku, which falls on August two,'',she said.

''Having taken into account the amount of the storage level in the meetur dam and the current inflow, I have ordered release of 6,000 cubic feet of water between July 25 and July 31 for Aadi Perukku, in addition to the 2000 cubic feet that was presently being released to meet thedrinking water needs,'' she added.

She also said the decision would enable people of the regions along the river bank to celebrate the Aadi Perukku in a grand manner.UNI GV CS 1541
