Under Japanese rule from 1910, Koreans were subjected to forced labor, conscription into the Japanese army, and, in extremely tragic cases, Korean women were forced to become "comfort women," serving as sexual slaves for Japanese soldiers.
Furthermore, Japan attempted to forcibly annex Korea, trying to eradicate its culture, language, and national identity. This included imposing the Japanese language, requiring the adoption of Japanese names, and restricting Korean cultural practices.
This dark period culminated with the end of World War II in 1945, when Japan surrendered and Korea finally achieved its long-awaited liberation (from Japan)... Which, while it might seem like a "good" thing... was actually just the beginning of a much more tragic chapter for Korea, one that continues to this day 🔥🤯
