Carlos Sainz explains the functions of the OIL button on the Formula 1 steering wheel.
An F1 engine can burn between 3 to 5 liters of oil per race. As the race progresses, the driver will be given a cue to push the Oil button to inject oil from a reservoir tank into the main dry-sump oil system.
However, new rules for 2019 dictate that the Auxiliary Oil Tank (AOT) must be empty for qualifying, as teams were using oil to supplement fuel in the combustion process and therefore make more power.
