In water-cooled engine, waterpump is a vital component.
The function of waterpump is to circulate coolant through the engine block water jacket and the radiator.
It is a mechanism that maintain the constant flow of coolant .
In most cases, waterpump is driven by a belt pulley system. Although, in some engine design, some waterpump are gear driven.
The waterpump component are; pulley hub, body, shaft, impeller or rotor and mechanical seal.
How does waterpump works?
The pulley hub transfer energy from the fan or timing belt into a rotation , spinning the shaft , therefore spinning the impeller . The rotor or impeller then circulate the coolant.
The video also mentioned the functions of mechanical seal. Mechanical seal prevent leakage of coolant into the bearing and also support the shaft for smooth rotation.
The body of waterpump is equipped with a vapour hole and a weep hole.
The vapour hole relieves excess gas pressure seeping through the mechanical seal.
The weep holes bleeds off excess coolant seeping through the mechanical seal.
Both hole functions as a safety to protect the shaft and the bearing from contamination.
