Human evolution began in Africa eight million years ago.
Climate change was a driving force behind human evolution.
The development of mental, social, and cultural skills was crucial for the successful spread of Homo sapiens.
Great apes, such as the orangutan, gorilla, chimpanzee, and bonobo, are our closest living relatives. We share 98% of our genes with chimpanzees. So, humans are descended from apes. However, not from one of the modern species, but from an unknown common ancestor of humans and chimpanzees. This species lived in Africa more than eight million years ago.
Humans are biologically different from their closest living relatives in the following ways:
a different set of teeth;
an upright gait;
a larger brain volume.
WE ARE ALL AFRICANS ...
Africa is the cradle of humanity. In the tropical climate of Africa, a variety of different species have developed over the past millions of years.
About eight million years ago, the climate became drier, causing a reduction in the area of tropical forests and, consequently, a change in habitat. Tropical forests were replaced by open forests and grasslands.
To survive in the open landscape, tree dwellers had to develop an upright gait. In an upright position, primitive humans could cover greater distances in grasslands. For example, by standing upright, they could notice an approaching leopard earlier.
Primitive humans also had to adapt to new food sources. Seeds, nuts, roots, small reptiles and mammals replaced a diet rich in fruits. This sometimes harsh diet required more stable molars with a larger chewing surface.
