We often like to talk about artificial intelligence in hypothetical terms, throwing out extreme use cases where AI is forced to make dramatic, ethical choices. The most famous example is the question of how a driverless car would weigh the life of pedestrians against the car’s occupants—a binary choice that will likely never be necessary.
Do these ruminations truly reflect the role AI will play in our lives? I recently interviewed Chris Nicholson, the founder and CEO of Pathmind, a company that’s using AI and something called Deep Reinforcement Learning to assist with manufacturing and supply chains.
And the way he describes the real-world use of these technologies, it sounds like rather than mistrusting AI, we should be trusting the humans using it. So I’m going to put forth a hypothetical question of my own to you.
Would you rather see a doctor who was assisted by AI, or would you prefer one who did not rely on this technology?
