Some of the largest freshwater fish kept as pets include oscars, discus, plecostomus, and even the common goldfish! If a smaller tank is more your style, you can stock them with small schools of neon tetras, danios, guppies and cory catfish.
Simply put, big fish need big aquariums. A 210-gallon aquarium is the bare minimum for a few Monster Fish species, but most need several if not many times that as adults, requiring a custom built aquarium or an indoor pond. Depending on the species you keep, you will need to provide plenty of swimming area, large decorations that cannot be easily moved or knocked over and hiding places for catfish and nocturnal species like knife fish. Artificial plants should have weighted bases and heaters should be located outside the aquarium or made of titanium or stainless steel if placed inside the aquarium. Keep a secure cover on the tank to prevent fish from jumping out.
The largest of the South American cichlids that are occasionally available are the Wolf Cichlid and the Peacock Cichlid. These are fish that can reach a length of 24" (60 cm) or more. They will require at specialized aquarium, one that is at least 250 gallons, with larger being better, and are best kept singly.
Tank Busters, also known as Monster Fish, are fish that get BIG; too big for the average hobbyist's store-bought aquarium. Opinions vary as to what constitutes a Tank Buster fish, but for this article, we're referring to any fish that has the potential to grow over 12 inches. They can be hard to resist when they're 3 or 4 inches long, which is the size normally offered in stores, but they quickly outgrow their homes. As many hobbyists soon learn, sometimes their tank mates begin to disappear, as well!
