The Ministry of Defense ordered an internal investigation and filed a complaint with the prosecutor's office to determine the source of the anonymous leak of more than a thousand reels of alleged intelligence files concerning repressive actions and military espionage, covering episodes of the dictatorship and in some cases extending to 2004.
The ministry, headed by Javier García, based its complaint on the possibility that these documents could assist in the ongoing investigation by the prosecutor's office into the recent past. They also seek to verify the authenticity of the material and identify who is behind the leak.
Yesterday, in an interview here on Perspectiva, Minister García linked the publication of these documents to the Executive Branch's decision to submit a bill to Parliament that would guarantee public and universal access to all existing archives from that period.
This confirms what the government has been saying. Because it would be much better if they were published with the guarantees of the law and not with the guarantee of an anonymous source whose word we have to take at face value. Now… would this have happened by magic if the government hadn't spurred political debate with a bill? I tell you, it wouldn't have.
