What are exit polls?
An exit poll is a post-election survey and is similar to an opinion poll, which is a pre-election survey.
Exit polls give estimates about how people voted in an election
The first exit poll was conducted in 1957 by the Indian Institute of Public Opinion.
Exit poll regulations in India
The Election Commission prohibits releasing exit polls during the voting process. However, they are allowed to be published 30 minutes after the last vote is cast.
This is governed by Section 126A of the Representation of the People’s Act, 1951 and any person who contravenes this provision shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to two years or with a fine or with both, as per the law.
