The rose in your perfume was probably picked by hand, before sunrise, in a valley in Bulgaria.
Kazanlak. The Valley of Roses. Nearly half the world's rose oil comes from these fields. The petals are picked at dawn while the dew still holds the scent, and they have about an hour to reach the distillery before the oil starts to fade. Thousands of kilos of blossom for a single kilo of oil. They call it liquid gold for a reason.
This was part of a series we shot in Bulgaria for IFRA, the body that represents the global fragrance industry. Bigger crew, multiple locations, the kind of production that takes real planning to pull off, and strict schedule.
A few summers back now. These are the kind of productions I would love to do more of: narratives with a real origin, shot on location, with the time and the team to do them right.
