Callaway Epic Flash Driver: Now Available At DICK’S Sporting Goods

Most new drivers can boast some type of groundbreaking technology promising more speed and distance, but in 2019, Callaway truly entered uncharted territory with Flash Face. DICK’S caught up with Dr. Alan Hocknell, Senior Vice President of Research & Development at Callaway, to get a closer look at the new Epic Flash driver.
“A lot of face designs over the last few years have focused on areas that are slightly thicker in the center of the face and then they go to some thinner region near the edge of the face. We challenged ourselves to say, ‘Could we do it differently in pursuit of even more ball speed?’”
“Differently” may be an understatement. To achieve their goal, Callaway engineers took a radical step and enlisted the help of a “super computer” to design the Epic Flash.
“We essentially wrote a set of rules so that the computer could design thousands of faces, using artificial intelligence for the first time to design a driver face,” Hocknell says.
A driver face typically goes through eight to 10 iterations throughout the design process, but Callaway’s revolutionary use of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning produced 15,000 face designs before arriving at Flash Face.
“You’ll be able to see a real enhancement in ball speed based on Flash Face Technology,” Hocknell says.
Epic Flash drivers also include Jailbreak Technology — two vertical bars behind the clubface that stiffen the crown and sole at impact. The result is greater impact-load and ultimately more ball speed.
Finally, players will benefit from Callaway’s Adjustable Perimeter Weighting — a 16-gram sliding weight that gives golfers the ability to promote draws, fades or straighter flight.
