In this Lenten reflection at the 2026 Lent Holy League Catholic Men's Conference, Fr. Joshua Clifton explores three essential dimensions of the Christian life: the interior life (prayer), the exterior life (almsgiving), and the meaning and purpose of suffering (fasting).
Beginning with the fundamental question of why God made us, Fr. Clifton explains that every person is created individually by God with a unique purpose: to know, love, and serve Him in this world and to be happy with Him forever in heaven. He shows how prayer is the path to union with God, not only for individuals, but also within the life of the family and the home.
He then turns to almsgiving, presenting it in its fullest sense: not only material generosity toward the poor, but the giving of Christ Himself through evangelization, witness, parish life, and authentic Christian charity.
Finally, Fr. Clifton reflects on fasting and suffering, showing how suffering entered the world through the Fall, how Christ repaired what was broken through His Passion, and how our own chosen and unchosen sufferings can be united to His for sanctification, reparation, and the salvation of souls.
This talk is a powerful meditation on Lent, vocation, communion, family life, sacrifice, and the call to holiness.
