Rajiv Gandhi was the 6th Prime Minister of India, serving from 1984 to 1989. He was born on August 20, 1944, and was the eldest son of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Initially a pilot, Rajiv entered politics reluctantly after the death of his younger brother, Sanjay Gandhi.
He became Prime Minister after his mother was assassinated in 1984. At 40, he was the youngest person to hold the office. Rajiv is known for promoting modern technology and telecommunications, as well as efforts to reform education and reduce government bureaucracy.
His tenure saw both progress and controversy, including the Bofors scandal, which affected his political reputation. He was assassinated in 1991 by the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) in Tamil Nadu during an election campaign.
