Tackling the Tsunami of Non-Communicable Diseases- Through Strengthening Health Systems, Governance, Public Health, Primary and Surgical Care
Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), which includes 27 out of the 34 low-income economies, bears the greatest burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). It is estimated that 4 in every 5 people with an NCD live in an LMIC. SSA will have the world’s largest increase in NCD-related deaths over the next decade. However, the largest bulk of NCD research and career development is largely conducted in high resourced countries. Nonetheless, SSA in general and Uganda specifically are increasing their investments in research, clinical care and career development to train experts in the prevention and management of NCDs. Makerere University, is the largest and leading tertiary institution conducting NCD research, research training and clinical care for NCDs in Uganda.
