In this video, I will explain and share an example of PMP Project Description approved by PMI audit committee. Before I share the PMP project description sample, I want to point you to the articles provided by PMI that outlines how you should describe the project so that you understand where I am coming from.
If you do a search on PMI website for application tips, you are likely to come across the following guideline:
The guideline recommends that you write a project description using the following format.
A brief summary of the project objective, followed by your responsibilities and project deliverables group by process areas, and finish with a brief summary of the project outcome.
If your application is audited and happened to fail the audit. You will likely get a rejection email from PMI with a link to the following document which provides additional details of what PMI is looking for in the project description. It will be really helpful if PMI can include this link with their online application, but I will provide the link below the video so that you can access it.
Note the slight difference in the recommended format from the previous article. The objective and outcome should be in one brief sentence, and the focus should be the project deliverables which are the tasks you lead and directed on the project. It also provides helpful examples of what project deliverables are.
Now that you understand what PMI is looking for in a project description, here is a PMP project description example that was approved by PMI audit committee.
First let’s lay out the framework that includes an objective, 5 domain groups, and an outcome statement.
When you write your objective, you need to make sure it is a project and not an operation. (I covered this in another video on how to avoid the 3 most common mistakes. If you are not sure, you should subscribe and check out the video.)
Coming back to our example here. Under each of the domain groups, you list the project methodologies and tasks that you directed for this project. You can also include a few tools and techniques that you used during the project such as meetings, and expert judgment.
The outcome can be just a very brief statement. It’s even better if you have a measurable result as part of your outcome statement.
